— THIS EVENT IS NOW IN THE PAST —

Come and sing a brand new choral arrangement of

ADAGIETTO from MAHLER 5

with John Warner

at

St. Cyprian’s Church, Marylebone, London

on

Saturday 6 January 2024

from 11:00 until 18:00 (approx)

It is the view of most Mahlerians that Mahler wrote this beautiful music for his new wife Alma.

Gustav Mahler and Alma Schindler were married at a private ceremony on 9 March 1902

during the composition of his Fifth Symphony.

According to a letter she wrote to Willem Mengelberg, the composer left a small poem:

Wie ich Dich liebe, Du meine Sonne,

ich kann mit Worten Dir's nicht sagen.

Nur meine Sehnsucht kann ich Dir klagen

und meine Liebe, meine Wonne!

In which way I love you, my sunbeam,

I cannot tell you with words.

Only my longing, my love and my bliss

can I with anguish declare.

We shall sing this German text, which can easily be sung to the first theme of the Adagietto, reinforcing the suggestion that it is indeed intended as Mahler's love note to Alma.

How it will work

John has recorded online videos for each voice part and as soon as you join, you will receive links to these immediately and you may watch these sessions as many times as you wish.

These rehearsals will be there for you to watch time and time again to make sure you are confident with your part.

Masterclass

Then on Saturday 6 January 2024 we shall all get together in person for a day in London with John.

A harpist will accompany us for the final sing through.

He will lead us in a Masterclass for the Adagietto and then we shall perform it in front of a small audience of family and friends, who may attend for free.
